As your putting coach, I’m starting our journey to better putting with the foundation of success: a perfect setup. A consistent setup aligns your body and mind, setting the stage for a smooth, accurate stroke. Let’s break it down.

Why It Matters

Your setup determines your stroke’s consistency. Misaligned feet or improper posture can throw off your aim and rhythm, leading to missed putts. A solid setup ensures you’re positioned to deliver the putter face squarely to the ball.

How to Do It

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight centered. Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to your target line, imagine railroad tracks pointing to the hole. Position your eyes directly over the ball; you can check this by dropping a ball from your eye line to see if it lands on or near your ball. Grip the putter lightly, like holding a small bird, to maintain feel and control. For example, during practice, place a club along your toes to confirm your alignment matches the target line.

Practice Drill

Try the “Mirror Drill.” Set up in front of a full-length mirror on a putting green or at home. Check that your shoulders are level and your eyes are over the ball. Then, place a golf ball under each armpit to keep your arms connected to your body, promoting a unified stroke. Make 10 practice strokes, focusing on maintaining this posture.
